Death and funeral notifications

The Association HQ has received the following notifications of deaths and funerals of Association members.

 

Derek Dugdale

The Association has been advised that Derek Dugdale sadly passed away on the 27th Aug 2019.

He had been suffering for quite a few months with prostate cancer.

Derek served with the  Regiment from 1969 to 1977, in Hong Kong, Cyprus and Northern Ireland.

Derek’s Daughter Yvette said Derek regularly attended the annual reunions in Halifax and was very proud to have served with The ‘Dukes’. His grandson now has his medals which he will cherish just as much, as he is a serving Scots guard who made his grandad very proud indeed.

Derek’s funeral was held in Burnley with the last post being played on 10th sept 2019.

 

Walter Robins

It is with great regret that we have been advised of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Walter Robins, on Wednesday 3rd of April in hospital.

Walter was a Korean Vet where he served as Signal Pl Sgt.  Walter later became RSM and Quartermaster of the 1st Bn and subsequently Quartermaster at Sandhurst Military Academy. Walter served as Regimental Secretary for many years and finally as Chairman of the Halifax Branch of the Regimental Association.

Pete Lord

It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the death of William John Lord – known to us as Pete Lord.

Pete served in the ‘Dukes’ from 1957 until leaving the Army, as a Cpl, in 1980.  Pete served with the 1st Bn in most postings including BAOR and Ballykelly, where he was awarded the BEM – and was well known and liked within the Regimental family.

Michael Whelan

Michael K Whelan died peacefully on the 24th of January 2019. 

Michael had trained at the Halifax Depot, in the fifties, and joined the Bn in Gibralter following the Korean War. 

He was, for some time, the Chairman of the Halifax Branch of the Association, until a ‘Stroke’ forced him to step down.

Roy Fern

It is with great regret that we have been asked to inform you all that Roy Fern has died of Lung Cancer on 3rd of January.

Roy served in the 1st Battalion at one stage as PRI Corporal and, together with many other postings, he also served in Ballykelly.

General Sir Charles Huxtable KCB CBE

General Sir Charles Huxtable KCB CBE passed away on Monday 26th November 2018. He was 87.

Sir Charles was commissioned into the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment in 1952 and served as a platoon commander in the Korean War. He commanded 1 DWR 1970-1972 and became Commander of Land Forces Northern Ireland in 1980.

Charles Bunbury

Charles Bunbury died in Ipswich Hospital. Was a Somme Company Commander of many years.

Charles was the Community Liaison Officer in Londonderry and used to go into all the PIRA pubs in the Bogside and Creggan with jacket, Regimental tie and dog to talk to all the ‘players’. They always respected that he was a safe conduit for communication and never harmed him.

Fred Greenwood

The Association has been advised of the death of Fred Greenwood; an ex-Duke who served in Korea, at the Hook, and later in Gibraltar.

The funeral was held at St Peter’s Church, Sowerby Bridge, on the 7th of November.

Lt Col (Rtd) Hugh Le Messurier

The Association has been advised that Lt Col (Rtd) Hugh Le Messurier has passed away. The funeral was held in Masham church, at 12:00hrs on the 4th of September

Hugh Le Messurier joined The ‘Dukes’ on the last day of December in 1939. During the second world war he served with the 1/7th in Iceland, and through Europe.

Robert (Jerry) Brook

The Association has been advised of the passing of Robert Brook (also known as Jerry).

Robert joined the army as a National Serviceman in early 1947. initially as a member of The West Yorkshire Regiment, but early in 1948 he was posted as a Corporal to 1DWR at Strensall where the Battalion were training recruits for The Yorkshire and Northumbrian Brigade.

Tony Whitworth

The Association has been advised of the passing of Tony Whitworth.

Tony Served in the regiment from Hong Kong until 1980, mostly in the Mortar Platoon.

Bryan Richardson

The Association has been notified of the Death and funeral details of former Duke Bryan Richardson.

Bryan saw service with the 9th Battalion (146 Squadron RAC), in India and Burma during WW2.

Malcolm Leslie Tolley

The Association has been notified of the Death and funeral details of former Sergeant Malcolm (Les) Tolley

Les first served with the Yorks and Lancs, form 1956 to 1958, then transferred to The ‘Dukes’ and served with them until 1979

Stephen Blagborough

The Association has been notified of the Death and funeral details of Stephen Blagborough.

Stephen served in the regiment from 1964 – 1986.

Clifford Morton

The Association has been notified of the Death and funeral details of Clifford Morton.

Clifford served with 1DWR in the 50’s and is a Korean War Veteran.

Ronald Barlow

The Association has been advised of the death of Ronald Barlow; from a heart attack.

Ronald enlisted into the York and Lancs before transferring to the ‘Dukes in 1969. He retired in 1982.

Michael Granger

The Association has been advised of the death of former 2Lt Michael Granger, on 10th May, by his son Jim.

Michael served with the ‘Dukes’, as a National Service officer, joining the 1st Battalion in Gibraltar on their return from Korea, in 1953.

Richard Jack Robins

Richard Jack Robins passed away on Tue 2 May 17, aged 79.

Richard was a Corporal in 1 DWR, who served with the battalion in Cyprus and Northern Ireland in 1957-58.

Tom Nowell MM

Tom Nowell sadly Passed away on Friday 24th February, 2017, aged 94

Tom Served with 1 DWR during the Korean war, where he was awarded a Military Medal.

Jack Parkinson

Jack Parkinson sadly passed away on 16th February, 2017.

Jack served in 1DWR from 1958 to 1982.

Ken (Blossom) Beaumont

Ken (Blossom) Beaumont, sadly passed away on Monday 16th of January, 2016.

Ken served in Corunna company in the 70’s.

David Anthony (Tiny) Carter

‘Tiny’, sadly passed away on 1st December 2016, at the age of 55.

‘Tiny’ served in the 1st Battalion between 1977 – 85.

Colonel Charles Cumberlege

Colonel Charles Cumberlege passed away on Monday 28th November, 2016.

Charles commanded the 1st Battalion in Gibraltar 1982 – 84.

Albert William (Bill) Bowen

Bill sadly passed away on 23rd November 2016 aged 93.

Bill served with the 1st Battalion during WW2 in Italy at the Battle of Anzio and at Monte Cece. He also served in Palestine and Egypt.

Charles Stewart Sadd

Charles Stewart Sadd Passed away in his sleep, at the age of 38.

Charles served in the 1st Battalion from May 1996 – September 1998.
