Regimental Memorial Unveiling – 17th May 2019

The Regimental memorial dedicated to the 304 years of service given by the Regiment to the nation and its historic ties to the people of the West Riding will be unveiled in Halifax on Friday 17th May 2019.

The memorial is a celebration of our common ‘Dukes’ heritage, it is an acknowledgement of all those who served in the Regiment over those 300 plus years as well as, most importantly, the families that supported those serving. It is also a recognition of the deep ties between the Regiment and our home county, the West Riding of Yorkshire, from which nearly all of our soldiers and many of our officers were drawn. Those deep ties are reflected in the memorial being sited in the heart of Halifax – home to our Regimental Depot, Regimental Headquarters, Regimental Chapel and Regimental Museum. Throughout the whole of the project to create and erect this memorial we have received the wholehearted support of Calderdale Council.

Calderdale Council, by giving the memorial a prime site within the town, have recognised that it is an exceptional piece of public artwork and one that they will be proud to be home to. Given the quality of the artwork Calderdale Council appreciate that it will also be a significant addition to the stature of the Town.

The Memorial will be unveiled by the Duke of Wellington and the Mayor of Calderdale.

This is a day to celebrate our Regiment. It is hoped that as many as possible from across the Regiment will join us for the concert in the Minster, the unveiling and then at our Regimental Association gathering in the Piece Hall afterwards.

Format of the Day.

The outline format of the day is:

  • 13.30 – 14.30 Musical Concert and Service in Halifax Minster. The Concert will tell the history of the Regiment in words and music. In doing this it will also look at how our ‘story’ is depicted on the memorial. An understanding of how this has been done, and the care the sculptor has taken to create something that many of believe to be truly exceptional (there is nothing else like it in the country), is an important ‘precursor’ to the unveiling itself. Please join us for this.
  • 15.15 – 15.45 Unveiling of the Memorial. Woolshops, Halifax
  • 16.15 – 20.30 (approximately)  Regimental Association reunion event including a buffet meal, Piece Hall, Halifax

The Musical Concert and Service in the Minster and the Unveiling itself in the Woolshops will also be open to the public – and needs to be as this is both a celebration and recognition of the Regiment and its ties to the people of our home county the West Riding.

The Regimental Association Reunion in the Piece Hall will be for Regimental Association members only including their family members and friends.

Regimental Association Event.

The Regimental Association event will be held in a Marquee in the Piece Hall and include a good quality buffet meal. Timothy Taylors brewery will be donating us 4 casks of ‘Havercake’ Ale which will need to be drunk.

It will be a ‘ticket entry’ event. Tickets will cost £15.00 per head. To achieve this the event is being subsidised to a generous level from Regimental Trust Funds.

NB: Ticket application form at the bottom of the page.

Please encourage those in the Regiment who you may be aware of who may not have received this letter directly and may like to come to the unveiling to use the website to download a ticket application form.

Applications for tickets and payment should reach the Regimental Association Office in Bankfield by: FRIDAY 3rd MAY 2019
