Final of Army Football: Played at Aldershot on 16 April
25th April 2008
Report Received from 3 Yorks. (with apologies for late inclusion... editor)
Yesterday the 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment footbal team put a valiant performance in on the Aldershot home of Army football. Unfortunately, despite all the showing Yorkshire grit in abundance, the team lost out to a well organised Air Corps' team who exploited their chances with precision play. The Yorkshire Regiment dominated the early phases of the game; ex Nabwood player Lcpl Kev Shinn was unfortunate not to capitalise on a couple of early chances. After the Yorkshire Regiment's early dominance the Air Corp side scored two breakaway goals, executing their chances with finesse and tempo. Returning onto the pitch after the break with a 2-0 deficit to overcome, the Yorkshire Regiment played with the determination and commitment that has kept their trophy cabinet bulging over the last two seasons. Despite this the Army Air Corps team were clinical and managed to score one more goal to finish the game 3-0 victors and Army champions.
The last two seasons have been a rennaissance period for football in 3 Yorks, this has been orchestrated by Captain Nick Wilson. Nick enlisted in Barnsley in 1985 and gained his commission after being the Regimental Sergeant Major, the Battalion's most senior soldier. Sport plays a key role in the Army and especially in the Yorkshire Regiment. Football has really taken offover the last two seasons, unfortunately we were beaten by a better side. Next Year hopefully we can improve on this year's regiment's sporting season, as well as reaching the Army Football Cup Final the Rugby team also had a successfull season reahcing their Semi Finals. We're always lookng for new players, football or rugby but they've got to be a soldier first!
