Brigadier WR (Dick) Mundell OBE

Brigadier Dick passed away on 5th June, 2021. He was commissioned into the Regiment in 1958, served as Corunna Company commander under Charles Huxtable in 1971 – 73 including the Regiment’s first two operational tours in Northern Ireland, commanded the 1st Battalion 1979 – 82 which again included two operational tours in NI for which he was awarded the OBE and Colonel of the Regiment 1990 – 1999.  

He became commander of 6th armoured Brigade in January 1983, Deputy Commander, North East District in July 1986 and Brigadier, Infantry BAOR in April 1988.

Funeral Details

Brigadier Dick Mundell’s funeral was held in York Minster on Thursday 24th June at 1400.  Owing to the Covid restrictions only 150 people were allowed to attend inside the Minster.

Brigadier Dick was brought into and out of the Minster by the large West End doors at the end of the nave. The area outside the Minster West End doors is a public open space. Being a public space there was scope for people to be there, to pay their final respects, as Brigadier Dick was carried into and out of the Minster, a distance of approximately 50 metres, by a team of Regimental Pall Bearers made up of Warrant Officers and Officers Commissioned from the Ranks.  Regimental Standards were also present. 

Brigadier Dick Mundell’s funeral was broadcast ‘live’ via a webcam.
