Robert Brook (also known as Jerry) passed away in the Hamden House Nursing Home, Harrogate, on 24th April 2018, aged 89.
Robert joined the army as a National Serviceman in early 1947, initially as a member of The West Yorkshire Regiment but, early in 1948. He was posted as a Corporal to 1DWR at Strensall where the Battalion were training recruits for The Yorkshire and Northumbrian Brigade. On leaving the army in 1949 Robert qualified as an accountant and began a career in the field of public transport; progressing through various bus companies, before becoming the Chief Executive Officer and later, in 1985, the Chairman of The National Bus Company. Robert was awarded the CBE for services to public transport. Robert remained a staunch supporter of the Dukes and made a generous donation to regimental funds after he and his wife Joan attended a fund raising dinner at Apsley House, London, prior to the tercentenary year. His son Tim also served in the ‘Dukes’ and, later, the Yorkshire Volunteers.
